Where is Military Hospital Cave located?
Military Hospital Cave in Cat Ba is situated within the Hung Son Cave, located in the Hai Son hamlet, Tran Chau commune, 13km away from Cat Ba town. This natural wonder, a unique marvel shaped by nature, offers captivating beauty that entices tourists when visiting Cat Ba Island.
It was named Military Hospital Cave because during the resistance against the United States, this place was selected as a field hospital to provide medical treatment for soldiers.
Routes and Transportation
Travelers need to choose a mode of transportation to reach Cat Ba Town, Hai Phong. From Cat Ba Town, they can take a motorbike or a taxi to the Cai Vieng ferry terminal, heading towards Cat Tien Road. From there, locate the 1/4 road direction and proceed through Tung Dinh and Tung Thu streets to access the cross-island road on Cat Ba.
During the journey, you’ll notice Military Hospital Cave on the right side of the road. As you approach Military Hospital Cave, there will be signs to guide you to this attraction.

History of Military Hospital Cave Before being named “Military Hospital Cave,” this place was called “Hung Son Cave.” The name Hung Son Cave was derived from a title given to a general who drove away foreign invaders during the victory at Bach Dang River. During the resistance against the United States from 1963 to 1965, this site was chosen as a location for a field hospital, later renamed as Military Hospital Cave.
The field hospital inside Military Hospital Cave could accommodate up to 100 wounded soldiers. It consisted of 17 hospital rooms and various other rooms for control, command, and strategic planning during the resistance against the United States.

Military Hospital Cave features a unique architectural design of 1-0-2 that astounds visitors upon their visit. Up to the present time, Military Hospital Cave has retained its original design from the period of resistance against the United States.
Exploring the Cave’s wartime design
The entrance to the cave was constructed with flexible wooden doors that could be easily assembled or disassembled to evade enemy surveillance or attacks. The entrance was also shielded with robust spherical iron covers to resist various types of projectiles.
The Military Hospital Cave comprises three levels housing 17 treatment rooms and multiple other functional rooms, spanning an area of 2000m2. The first level was solidly constructed with reinforced concrete, while the upper two levels were carved from natural stone.
The structure of Military Hospital Cave remains enclosed within the depths of Hung Son Cave, concealing any appearance from the outside. Its exterior maintains a primitive and natural look. The enemy wouldn’t suspect that deep within the cave lay the main headquarters and medical treatment facility.

As the cave features numerous small steps and inclines, wearing sturdy, non-slip footwear on rainy days and moving slowly is recommended for safety.
